After Surgery

If instructed, you may shower 24-48 hours after surgery. Certain surgeries and casts may not get wet; instructions will be given on protecting these areas or applications.

We prefer you clean your wound daily with hydrogen peroxide unless otherwise instructed. Keep your wound covered and please do not use antibiotic ointments and creams.

Any signs of increased wound redness, purulent (puss) drainage and odor, or increased temperature, please notify our office.

Modify activities, use ice and elevation for all extremity surgeries to decrease swelling. You may be given daily exercises to help in range of motion and swelling.

Total joint replacement patients are placed on prophylactic blood thinner injections (to prevent blood clots) for approximately 10 days to 3 weeks. Please continue wearing the support hose until you have finished all injections.

If you are placed in a splint, brace, immobilizer, sling, or sling with a body strap, please do not remove unless instructed by our office.

Shoulder surgery patients do best after surgery sleeping in a recliner or reclining position. We recommend a recliner position for approximately 1-2 weeks post surgery.

Please take pain medication as the doctor has prescribed and directed by the pharmacy. Contact the office to discuss supplementing with an anti-inflammatory or non narcotic drug. Avoid alcohol, driving, and operating machinery if on narcotics.

Please do not hesitate to call our office for any questions or concerns.
